Smoke Odor is Stubborn and Challenging to Eliminate
Smoke odor from smoke damage is difficult to eliminate and can remain in clothing, upholstered furniture, carpets and draperies unless they are properly deodorized before cleaning. MicroTech can assist with this effort.
MicroTech uses special cleaners that break up smoke molecules to eliminate odors. The type of cleaners used will vary with the type of material burned in the fire. These cleaning counteractants may be professionally applied to furniture, carpets and draperies.
Below are some DIY tips you can try for removing smoke odor:
- For items that can’t be bleached can try dissolving one cup of dishwashing detergent—the type used in an automatic dishwasher—in one gallon of warm water.Once the detergent has dissolved, submerge the items and let them soak all night in your washing machine or bathtub.Drain and wash in the laundry as usual the next day.
- For items that can be bleached, try mixing 4 to 6 tablespoons trisodium phosphate (available from your hardware store) with 1 cup Lysol or household chlorine bleach and 1 gallon of water.Add clothes, rinse with clear water and dry.
These techniques are great for some items such as clothes but are really hard to address with items such as furniture of larger items.
It is recommended to have your carpets cleaned twice. Once before before repairs to get a majority of the smoke and ash removed but also once after repairs to get any construction cleaned. It is important that wet carpets must be dried before cleaning. In some cases, removal of carpet is necessary for complete drying and to save the wood floor beneath. MicroTech can also assist with both water extraction and carpet cleaning services.
